"We&rsquo;re not at war," says U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks. "We are not seeking to be at war, but we have to be able to get this department to move with that same kind of urgency because the PRC isn&rsquo;t waiting."
Hicks was discussing the alleged "pacing challenge" the Pentagon is experiencing as China deploys AI and other technologies in a massive military buildup&mdash;and Beijing's colossal rollout is also being informed by the needs of modern warfare. For example, China is committing deeply to AI research and development, and its military is not slowed by regulations.
China's military has already surpassed the U.S. in troop size, as well as the number of ships and missiles. Disquieting to say the least...
As a result, the Pentagon is evaluating military tech such as an AI-powered fleet of autonomous drones to compete with China, as well as counter threats from Beijing in the future. The U.S. project will cost millions of dollars; produce thousands of air, sea, and land systems; and deploy within two years.
Autonomous U.S. military systems are reportedly being devised for navigation and targeting.

As the United States considers outfitting commercial ships sailing in the Strait of Hormuz with armed personal to stop Iran's seizure of civilian vessels, Iran's Revolutionary Guard is equipping its Navy with missiles and drones in response.&nbsp;

&ldquo;What do the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean have to do with America?" stated Iranian armed forces spokesperson Brigadier-General Abolfazl Shekarchi, who maintains the region is capable of defending its waterways. "What is your business being here?&rdquo;&nbsp;
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical oil passageway. It's the only path to open waters for one-sixth of global oil production and one-third of the planet's liquidifed natural gas.
Iran has seized a number of ships in the strait since 2019. Allegedly, the action is an effort by Iran to pressure the West regarding negotiations the country's broken nuclear deal with global powers.
Tehran maintains that the detained ships have been guilty of shipping violations.&nbsp;
Tehran also says the region does not need "foriegner" providing security in the Strait.

Iranian navy muscles up missiles and drones

Lying in a crater and suffering chest and leg wounds from the shelling of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast in Ukraine, Serhiy&mdash;a lone Ukrainian soldier&mdash;wasn't sure whether to rejoice or crawl for cover when a drone hovered over him.
Separated from his army unit and "too close to the Russians," Serhiy's paranoia was certainly understandable.
Manned aircraft, ships, and other military vehicles usually carry some markings that identify which side they're on. The tiny drones used on the battlefields during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, however, may as well be invisible, as it is near impossible to visually confirm whether they are comrade or enemy, merely watching your movements, or are about to drop a bomb at your position.
For Serhiy, it was "a lottery."
After some tense moments, the drone flew away, returning with water, medicine, and a note.
The drone was on Serhiy's side, after all.
Even better, combat medics were able to reach Serhiy's location in two days and evacuate him to a hospital, where he was treated for a pierced lung and leg wounds.
For Eugene&mdash;a drone pilot with the 15th national guard brigade&mdash;finding Serhiy crawling in a bombed out fissure points to how drones may be able to prevent other wounded soldiers and personnel from facing life-threatening hardships without food, water, medicine or hope&mdash;even in dangerous situations.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Drone Drops Aid to Wounded Ukrainian Soldier

Happily, the U.S. drone made it back to base.

In fact, such encounters are becoming quite common.

Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Russian jet fighter plays "chicken' with U.S. Drone

At the May Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) XPONENTIAL 2023, held in Denver, Colorado, <a href="https://kaman.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kaman Corporation </a>(NYSE: KAMN) displayed <a href="https://kaman.com/brands/kaman-air-vehicles/kargo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KARGO UAV</a>&mdash;arguably the largest quad-rotor system at the show. The rotor system spans 24 ft in the flight-ready configuration and folds and ships in a 20-foot ISO container.
<h5>Charlie Kaman: A Trailblazer in Rotary Aircraft</h5>

Charles Huron Kaman (1919-2011) was a 26-year-old engineer in 1945, when he founded Kaman Aircraft Company in the garage of his mother&rsquo;s West Hartford, Connecticut home with $2,000 invested by two friends. He started the company to demonstrate a new rotor concept he devised to make helicopters more stable and easier to fly. Over the next half-century, Mr. Kaman built the company into a worldwide leader in the aviation industry. Kaman Aircraft, now Kaman Corporation, has become a billion-dollar company. (For the musicians in our reader community, Kaman also founded <a href="https://www.ovationguitars.com/en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ovation Guitars</a> in 1966, and used aerospace composite materials in their design.)
Kaman was a pioneer in the development of the unmanned helicopter. He developed the remotely-controlled HTK-1 in the 1950s, and conducted testing of his Shipboard Very Low-Frequency System on the cruiser USS Wright (CG-2) in the early 1960s, using two QH-43G Huskie drones without a single mishap during the extended sea trials.
Kaman helicopters saw extensive service in Vietnam, with both the HH-43 Huskie and UH-2/SH-2 Seasprite conducting numerous operations for the United States Air Force, Marines, Navy, and several partner countries. While both are retired from US military service, the SH-2 is still in use by multiple foreign militaries, and some HH-43 are still in civilian use.
Starting in 1998, Kaman ventured into unmanned helicopters again, this time adapting the K-1200 K-MAX &ldquo;aerial truck&rdquo;. In early 2007, Kaman partnered with Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMCO) to develop an unmanned, Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS), vehicle version intended for use in hazardous missions. In 2011, two unmanned K-MAX helicopters were delivered to the United States Marine Corps for use in the Afghanistan theater of operations. In December 2011, the Marines conducted the first unmanned aerial system cargo delivery in a combat zone using the unmanned K-MAX, moving approximately 3,500 pounds of food and supplies to troops at Combat Outpost Payne.
Originally intended as a short, limited-objective experiment in Afghanistan, the USMC kept the unmanned K-MAX helicopters in theater for nearly three years. Operating almost exclusively at night, the Kaman UAS lifted over 4.5 million pounds of cargo that would otherwise have been delivered by ground convoy which would have exposed hundreds of Marines to deadly IED attacks. Unmanned K-MAX also demonstrated operational capability in firefighting, dropping more than 24,000 pounds of water onto a target fire.

<h5>KARGO UAV and Autonomy</h5>
Although the work done in Afghanistan with the USMC did not lead to a program of record, it did aid the Corps in development of a follow-on effort: the Medium Unmanned Logistics Systems&mdash;Air (MULS-A) program. Under the program, the UAS will be evaluated on its ability to perform a distributed logistics mission in a contested environment. The goal of the project is to demonstrate a UAS that can carry logistics payloads between 300 and 600 pounds to a combat area with a radius of 25 to 100 nautical miles.&nbsp; KARGO UAV is designed to do just that.
KARGO UAV is a purpose-built autonomous medium-lift logistics vehicle. Kaman began development of the KARGO UAV Medium Lift UAS in early 2021, with a half-scale demonstrator flown in the Fall of 2021. The full-scale demonstrator will fly in 2023. Near Earth Autonomy, from Pittsburgh, PA was selected as the autonomy provider on KARGO UAV, and parallel testing is ongoing for the autonomy systems that will be employed on KARGO UAV.
The primary mission of KARGO UAV is to provide military and commercial logistics support. For military customers, KARGO UAV provides a low-cost, low-risk alternative to manned flight operations in a contested environment.

Built with the Marines&rsquo; future operating concept in mind, KARGO UAV offers a rugged design optimized for expeditionary logistics. The compact form factor of the system fits in a standard CONEX shipping container and is designed to be unloaded and operated by as few as two people.
For commercial customers, KARGO UAV provides an economical platform that can conduct cyclic, reduced-risk operations during bad weather or during the periods of darkness. As a testament to that, Kaman and Petroleum Helicopters International (PHI Aviation LLC) has entered into a master commercial agreement for the promotion, sales, and support of a commercial version of Kaman&rsquo;s KARGO UAV unmanned aerial system, including collaboration relating to its ongoing design and certification. In connection with that agreement, Kaman and PHI entered into a Non-Binding Memorandum of Understanding outlining PHI&rsquo;s intent to purchase 50 units of Kaman&rsquo;s commercial KARGO UAV. Kaman and PHI expressed their commitment to work together to bring KARGO UAV to the broader commercial market and offer field support in the future.
"Its total weight is about 2800 lb. [1270 kg], and cargo capacity makes up to 800 lb. [362.87 kg] of that," said Kaman's Barry Maxwell, Senior Director of Business Development. "The cargo system is configurable such that freight can be flown in a conformal pod or carried by external sling load&hellip;.&rdquo;&nbsp; While we are focused on cargo operations, the large payload capacity can support a host of other mission-specific payloads, if the customer desires.
KARGO UAV&rsquo;s fuselage is composed largely of a composite shell around a lightweight aluminum structure, with the pod fitted underneath between two landing skids. A gas turbine engine powers the UAV's mechanical propulsion architecture, with the four rotors mounted above the fuselage on an X-shaped set of arms. Many factors influenced the decision to go with a turbine power plant and mechanical drive system.&nbsp; &ldquo;At the end of the day, we settled on what we consider the intersection of simplicity and necessary complexity...We needed a UAV that leveraged proven and affordable technology to deliver cargo to our customers with the highest degree of reliability and mission assurance. When the weight and power density of batteries or the availability of fuel cells in austere environments can meet the requirements, we can reevaluate and adjust.&rdquo;

KARGO UAV is designed to carry a 90 kg payload for distances up to 722 km (390 nm) in 3.3 hours or a 272 kg payload up to 265 km (143 nm) over 1.2 hours. Alternatively, if equipped with a 22.7 kg payload and required to hover in place (for instance, in a comms relay or airborne persistent surveillance capacity), it can do so for up to 4.7 hours. KARGO can also self-deploy beyond 926 kilometers (500 nautical miles) with no cargo onboard.

&ldquo;With systems like KARGO UAV continuing to push the boundaries, I see a very bright future ahead for medium lift UAS, especially in the vertical lift arena,&rdquo; said Maxwell. &ldquo;With growing interest in the energy sector for resupply at sea and in remote areas, middle- and last- mile logistics eliminating trucks, as well as Search and Rescue, nighttime firefighting, disaster relief and Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC) the case for further developing medium- and heavy lift autonomous UAS capability is definitely strong.&rdquo;

<h5>Defining UXO and Abandoned Ordnance</h5>
UXO refers to projectiles, bombs, or rockets that were fired but failed to detonate for various reasons. Abandoned ordnance, on the other hand, includes explosive elements that were left behind or dropped without being used. Both terms encompass the remnants of war or ERW (Explosive Remnants of War). While UXO and abandoned ordnance are often used interchangeably, the focus of this article primarily revolves around UXO detection.
<h5>The Problem of UXO</h5>
Modern weapons, despite advancements, still have failure rates ranging from 5% to potentially as high as 40%. This means that a significant number of explosive elements remain unexploded on the battlefield.&nbsp;
&ldquo;For instance, in Ukraine, where artillery shells are used extensively, up to 20,000 shells per day are deployed, with approximately 1,000 shells remaining unexploded. This poses a long-term threat to the safety of affected areas long after conflicts have ended,&rdquo; said&nbsp;Dobrovolskiy.
<h5>Distinguishing UXO from Landmines</h5>
It's important to note that landmines are distinct from UXO. While both pose risks after conflicts, they differ in terms of classification and detection. Landmines are intentionally buried and often smaller in size compared to UXO. Moreover, they contain minimal or no ferrous metal, making them challenging to detect using magnetometers or metal detectors. Drones equipped with magnetometers, however, are effective in detecting UXO due to the presence of ferrous metal.
<h5>Real Use Case: Drone-based UXO Detection</h5>

In a large farmland field that served as a World War II frontline, a search for UXO was conducted using a drone equipped with a magnetometer. Over the course of a few days, 158 UXO items were discovered and subsequently disposed of. The scanning of the field also led to the discovery and safe destruction of a 250-kilogram bomb buried at a depth of 1.8 meters. The integrated system utilized in this project included UgCS Pro flight planning and management software, a drone with a terrain-following system, a MagDrone R3 magnetometer from a German company SENSYS, and SENSYS MAGNETO software for data processing.
<h5>The Power of Drones and Magnetometers</h5>
Drones equipped with magnetometers offer several advantages for UXO detection. They enable rapid scanning of large areas, with typical productivity reaching around one hectare per hour or even faster with multi-sensor magnetometer payloads. Drones excel in unobstructed spaces, making them ideal for surveying open fields, coastal areas, or inaccessible zones. Combining drones and magnetometers allows for efficient data collection, enhancing the overall productivity of UXO detection operations.
<h5>Limitations and Considerations</h5>
The main problem with all complex sensors (magnetometers, <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://shop.ugcs.com/collections/ugcs-integrated-systems/GPR" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GPR</a>, EMI detectors) is that no one can guarantee a 100% (or even any particular) detection rate of threats, especially if these sensors are employed using drones. If you repeat multiple surveys over the same area using the same sensor and same flight pattern, you may get different results in terms of list identified and classified targets.
That means that no one should interpret the results of such surveys as a guarantee of the presence or absence of ERW.
But, thanks to their capability to scan large areas without personnel entering into suspected hazardous areas, drones with magnetometers are a valuable tool for data gathering on a non-technical survey (NTS) or technical survey (TS) stage of the land release process.
While the combination of drones and magnetometers is a powerful tool for UXO detection, certain limitations must be taken into account. The amplitude of magnetic anomalies decreases with distance, making it crucial to fly the drone as low as possible, ideally one meter or less from the ground. Drones with magnetometers are facing challenges when surveying areas with dense vegetation or metallic debris. It is crucial to account for electromagnetic interference from sources like power lines or railroads, as well as the limitations of detection in areas contaminated with metallic objects. Moreover, expertise and experience play a vital role in optimizing the success rate of UXO detection using this technology. Careful planning, calibration, and ongoing training are essential to ensure accurate and reliable results in UXO clearance operations.

"How dare you allow the drones to reach Moscow?" stated Wagner mercenary group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Prigozhin&mdash;a former convict, former hot-dog stand operator, restauranteur, and entrepreneur who founded and leads one of Russia's private mercenary militias&mdash;blamed the success of the Moscow drone attack on the "scum and swine" top brass who reside in the affluent suburb of Rublyovka.&nbsp;
Wagner is active in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and Prigozhin has repeatedly criticized the "out of touch" military and political elite for Russian battlefield failures.
Russian President Vladimir Putin&mdash;whose home in Novo-Ogaryovo is near Rublyovka&mdash;blamed Ukraine for what he characterized as "terrorist attacks" that targeted civilians as a scare tactic. Kyiv has denied involvement.&nbsp;
The U.S. stated it is gathering information on the strike, which injured two people and damaged property. The White House also stated it does not support attacks by Ukraine that are inside Russia.
That did not sit well...
&ldquo;What are these attempts to hide behind the phrase that they are &lsquo;gathering information&rsquo;?&rdquo; stated Russian ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov. &ldquo;This is an encouragement for Ukrainian terrorists."
Antonov did not commit on his own country's military attacks on Ukrainian civilians and other non-combatants.
