I first learned of the sightings of drones in New Jersey on November 19, from the leader of our elected county commission, and former Warren County Community College student, James Kern. When first asked about these sightings a month ago, I asked classes of students to keep an eye on the night sky, and just for the record, to&nbsp;date we have only seen small drones (the 2-4lb, typical drone we would expect to see in affluent areas in New Jersey).
I was first contacted by North Jersey&rsquo;s regional media on November 26 by the <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.dailyrecord.com/story/news/2024/11/27/fbi-investigates-after-mystery-north-jersey-drone-sightings/76592029007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Morristown Daily Record</a>, where I tried to explain that the drones were most likely small drones flown by our recreational <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.faa.gov/uas/recreational_flyers/knowledge_test_updates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FAA Trust</a> certified pilots or by Part 107 pilots engaged in commercial flights, but that it would be impossible for me to discount a flyaway from Picatinny Arsenal given its close geographic proximity. The paper is owned by Gannett Co. Inc., which also owns the USA Today, which grabbed the headline and in large part began the current media frenzy, which quickly became a proverbial political football.
Not realizing the coming storm, like all of you I went on to enjoy friends and family for Thanksgiving. Upon my return to work, frankly I had forgotten the whole thing, and I most certainly did not see a single drone of the size described in the night sky (I am still waiting to see one, even though I have been out hunting for the better part of a month). On December 8th, my media folks at Warren County Community College called to tell me that the story was likely going national and that our <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.nj.com/news/2024/12/what-are-the-rules-for-flying-drones-in-nj-heres-what-experts-say.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statewide news media</a> was calling for comment as we have the most advanced drone training program in New Jersey.&nbsp;
On December 10, I reached out to a couple <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://dronelife.com/2024/12/11/understanding-the-new-jersey-drone-sightings-separating-fact-from-fiction/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">media contacts</a> and <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.thedroningcompany.com/blog/new-jersey-drone-sightings-may-not-be-drones" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Droning Company</a> to share my perspective, because I know that reporters follow their &lsquo;gut&rsquo; on a story, whereas this college president follows the science. All along, I have suspected that there are no large drones over NJ, but there did seem to be a large number of eyewitnesses that kept growing, especially after the politicians on both sides of the aisle added to the story. Many of these folks are close personal friends of mine, and they have never lied to me, yet I know in my heart that there are no large drones flying over New Jersey even though many truly believe they saw them.
The story continued to grow with the alleged sightings. I began to realize when <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=933795925345783" target="_blank" rel="noopener">helping reporters</a> who would send me files, stop by the drone lab, or just ask me live on TV, what people were looking at (hint: it was always an airplane or a small drone, or in a couple of cases an over zoomed in picture of the planet Jupitor, which is very clear in New Jersey right now). The Associated Press began to pick up the story, and now between the Gannett story and the AP story, I was seeing my name in just about every newspaper in the nation. I am an extremely private person, so friends asked why I would get involved. The reason is simple, I do fear the repercussions of how this story could hurt our industry, progress, and the chances of our students finding gainful employment, whereas last year WarrenUAS <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.ccdaily.com/2024/01/partnerships-beyond-just-transfer-students/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">students were signing six-figure employment contracts</a>.
By now the political and media forces were travelling throughout the state, searching for drones (likely with little to no knowledge of drones). They were allegedly finding drones, where after almost a month, I couldn&rsquo;t find or verify much more than a couple of DJI Mavic&rsquo;s, two Phantoms, and a rare M600 sighting &ndash; but absolutely not a single drone over 55lbs. College presidents exist to run colleges but often should exist to speak to the truth wherever it takes us, this is what the true meaning of Academic Freedom is, and as this president also enjoys tenure as a faculty member, I may be one of the last people who can speak truth where ever it leads.
Our team decided to reach out to the national media to share our drone story and to suggest that perhaps people were experiencing the parallax effect, spotting planes, and becoming disoriented and confused into believing they were seeing drones. We in the aviation community are familiar with this concept, among others, that make such night flying aircraft hard if not impossible at times to distinguish. Our team appeared first on <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6365948563112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FOX News</a> (which has covered happenings at Warren County Community College many times in the past). On the way back from that airing, the Associated Press was calling with more questions, and <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://x.com/ac360/status/1867749501462511998?s=42" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> was practically racing after us to get to our drone port hoping we could do a night flight demo for them. As that team was arriving at the college, the <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/13/world/video/the-lead-drones-fbi-government-jake-tapper" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jake Tapper</a> show asked me to come on live to talk about recently sited drones by NJ Senator Andy Kim. Unfortunately, I could see on the screen immediately that poor <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/andy-kim-drones-donald-trump_n_67609df8e4b007ff17a49f8e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senator Kim and law enforcement had mistaken airplanes for drones</a>, and although I really did not want to, I was compelled by logic and reason to state the truth. Senator Kim, among other politicians, has now stated that his misidentification came from a lack of trust of the government (which I thought he was a part of), and which I get is related to not accepting the response or the utter lack of it from our federal government. Still, how are all these intelligent people seeing so many drones, hearing them, and having them hover over their homes? I thought, surely, I must be going mad? Still, I knew the truth in my heart, so I kept pushing for the sake of our industry.
Finally, to ensure that I could demonstrate that all my opinions were based on fact and not on politics as I live a life of metaphysics based in objective reality and an epistemology of reason, I really searched the internet hard for some sign of any large drone in flight at night in New Jersey. After this hard search for facts, I began hoping this story was bound to have run its course, I mean no one actually had identified a single large drone, so when asked I went on <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.msnbc.com/weekends-with-alex-witt/watch/drone-expert-debunks-mystery-sightings-and-explains-how-lasers-can-be-deadly-to-passing-pilots-227121733880" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MSNBC</a> to be more forceful about the fact that we are mistaking airplanes for drones at night, that&rsquo;s why we don&rsquo;t see drones in the daytime, because they are actually airplanes. I mean at this point <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.nj.com/news/2024/12/planes-over-nj-hit-by-lasers-as-hunt-for-drones-continues.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">my statewide education reporter</a> is asking me to&nbsp; speak to the fact that people on the ground are trying to use laser pointers to take down drones and its impacting the safety of manned flights in NJ (a fact I verified with local airport managers). I also verified that no commercial pilot had reported seeing all these drones and that that all flights in the NAS were proceeding as normal. This kind of behavior could get people hurt or worse.
So now, two days later, as I write this essay, by request, I sit here listening to early morning stories in the background about so-called mystery drones, watching reporters show videos of obvious airplanes and call them drones on the air, and I think how did we get here and what is this phenomenon as most certainly it is not drones. I am now certain of this because over the weekend, the sophisticated federal tracking software identified a whopping 12 sightings Saturday (December 14) and just one on Sunday (December 15) in the entire state of New Jersey as reported by the <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://apnews.com/article/drones-new-jersey-what-to-know-e6f565f5d51d9d47ad140e7e7d131842" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a>. I thought all this should have dispelled the idea that there are thousands of drones in the NAS in New Jersey?
How could so many people be seeing and experiencing drones that are not there? To answer this, I must put away my Embry Riddle Aeronautical University aviation degrees and take out my sociology degrees from Loyola University of Maryland and Temple University. You see, there is a concept in sociology called, &ldquo;Mass Sociogenic Illness,&rdquo; where healthy folks develop the symptoms of people around them for illnesses the healthy do not have, or to put it simply we often model the behavior of those around us that we trust in very deep ways. So, what are we experiencing then, I feel it is two things, first, there is definitely a sociological phenomenon that I am going to term &nbsp;here and now as &ldquo;Mass Sociogenic Technophobia,&rdquo; which I now believe explains all the previous drone sightings that came and went around the nation, which now seems to be spreading thanks to an udder lack of leadership by our federal government. You see, at this point it no longer matters if there were actual drones in the NAS, to the hearts and minds of thousands, they saw large drones and no one will ever convince them otherwise, just bring on the Congressional Hearings to prove my point.
It is time for some real leadership from the FAA. Please stop sitting silently by and do the hard work of telling folks that there were no drones, as we both know that is the truth. There are a lot of us out here who have dedicated years and countless resources to this industry, and I fear a coming overreaction to a sociological phenomenon mistaken for a technological one that will have all of us in the industry forever scrambling to catch up because of new regulations to make sure these mystery drones never return from wherever it is they will now likely go, which I can only assume is back to the imagination. This will give our adversaries the boost everyone in NJ already assumed they had. It is time, the silence has now hurt enough people this holiday season, and only heaven will know the aftereffects for our industry. Enough is enough already, enjoy the holiday, there does not appear to be a single large drone, and perhaps there never was one in the first place.

No Large Drones in New Jersey Skies!

My journey into the drone life began many years ago and it didn&rsquo;t begin with drones. It all began in a little mountain village in Lebanon in March of 1961. This little country is in the Mediterranean Sea with Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south with the Mediterranean Sea on its west. I was fortunate and blessed to move to California, USA in 1965 with my aunt and uncle. I underwent a dozen or so operations on my legs to counter the effects of polio. My last operation was in 1975 before I entered high school. The nationally recognized Orthopedic Surgeon did wonders for me.
I am grateful to God for allowing me to come to the US, land of the free and home of the brave. After high school, I obtained a certificate as an audio engineer. After that, I decided to pursue a medical career as a Respiratory Therapist before getting married to the gorgeous woman who is helping me edit this paper and we had ten children.
In the early 1990&rsquo;s I became fascinated with videography. I began doing small video projects and was encouraged to continue with this hobby, which became a side business, E.G. Video Creations. I videotaped a lot of weddings and special events, produced medical training videos and produced and edited The Rock Guitar Video You&rsquo;ve Been Waiting For.
As my family grew, I developed an entrepreneurial spirit and found creative ideas to bring in more income. I added the business of doing digital photo transfers and 8mm reel to reel transfers to VHS. Film transfers were in high demand as media technology changed rapidly.
I also advanced my education by obtaining a BS in Business Management and an MBA in Health Care Management. I continued with my video business and shooting weddings and perfecting my creativity in post-production. By 2010 I was no longer working in the hospital setting but worked in education, teaching aspiring Respiratory students.
I was hired to shoot a wedding in 2020. The venue was in beautiful Oak Glen, California. I was searching the venue on the web and found an awesome aerial YouTube video of the venue. I was fascinated and intrigued by the video and I just had to have that clip in my post-production of the wedding video. I contacted the owner, and he gave me permission to use part of it. I thought it was awesome, and I just had to get more of these aerial shots. I developed a desire to use drones for videography.

After a bit of research, I purchased a cheap drone from a pawn shop. It was called The Beast (or something like that). The images were not good quality. I practiced and played around with it and took some videos and pictures, but they were not good enough for professional work. I realized that I could make money using my drone. During my research, I discovered that if I wanted to make money with my drone, I would have to register the drone with the FAA and get a pilot&rsquo;s license called Part 107. So, in 2022, I registered that cheap drone with the FAA and began to study for the Part 107 exam. I continued to fly that drone and began looking for a professional drone.
The name DJI kept popping up and I realized that I had better buy a DJI drone because they were well-known drone manufacturers. I found my first Phantom 4 Pro version1 on eBay. I was able to save up some money to purchase it later in November 2022. I continued to study for the Part 107 and finally on November 29, 2022, I passed the exam the first time. Once I received my official Remote Pilot&rsquo;s License card, I began to practice flying my Phantom 4 Pro. I practiced and practiced several times a week. The next step was to figure out how to begin making money. That was a challenge. I wasn&rsquo;t sure where to start.
I found Dronersio and completed the onboarding process and it wasn&rsquo;t much after that that I was offered my first drone job. It was a piece of vacant land in Calimesa. The winds were 10 mph but all went well. I followed the steps they laid out and I completed my first project. Wooo Hooo!!! I made $80 on that project. I continued to do more projects and began doing commercial real estate projects. I joined Drone U and began learning more about drones and their use in construction. I learned that I should set up an LLC and did so in November 2022. And so began United Drone Services, LLC.
In early 2023 I received an email from Drone Brothers in Michigan asking if I would be interested in doing a bimonthly drone shoot that would last for 1 year for the construction of a new Home Depot hub in Perris, California (10 miles from my home). I jumped on it! It was doing 11 Panos using Drone Deploy with my P4P.
By that point I had completed a dozen other drone jobs with Dronersio, but still couldn&rsquo;t count on it as a main source of income, since the cost of living is very high in California. I was able to acquire my second P4P by mid-2023 and later that year I purchased the Autel Evo 2 version 1. On my last day of the construction project, I was flying the P4P when I lost signal and visual line of sight. The P4P went down on the roof and was rendered useless. I was able to locate the drone the next day and take a picture of its location. I was able to complete the project the following day. The construction project manager retrieved my crashed drone for me. I learned the importance of having hull insurance. I was able to get a new P4P with the insurance claim.

I continued to learn on the uses of drone technology. Roof inspections, Orthomosaic, Mapping, Thermal inspections, Cell tower inspections, Cinematic expressions, movie industry and the list goes on. I joined the The Pilot Institute to educated myself on the business aspect of the use of drones and conintued to use the Drone U website&nbsp; as well to increase my knowledge base.My drone fleet increased to DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2, Autel Evo 2 Dual (with the Flir 640R payload) and the DJI Mini 3 Pro
I was becoming more confident from my experiences, but I realized that I knew very little about drones and their fast-growing technological use. I completed several mapping projects and dabbled with 3D rendering as well. I began looking for other drone hiring companies to do more jobs. I signed up with VidTech, Drone Videos and Zeitview and completed a number of projects for each of them but, I thought that the pay was not quite what I felt I deserved, so I began to market my services on my own. It had not been easy to get jobs with those businesses and I had been at my wits&rsquo; end when I found The Droning Company.
I read about Stuart Smith and I connected with his story and his need to provide for his family. He was from my era&mdash;the 70&rsquo;s and 80&rsquo;s&mdash;and he was a rock and roller in real life. I signed up immediately and he contacted me in record time, welcoming me on board. He encouraged me and provided guidance on how to get my name out there, using The Droning Company platform, so I could begin making money without the middleman. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow my business, while doing what I enjoy.

You may already have seen online, but if not, the <a style="color: #ba372a;" title="https://www.votervoice.net/BroadcastLinks/sAu2eytcSw44S8PWgXH_lQ" href="https://www.votervoice.net/BroadcastLinks/sAu2eytcSw44S8PWgXH_lQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable" data-linkindex="0">text of the 2025 National Defense Authorization Act</a> was released by the House Rules Committee on Saturday. We are thrilled to report that the Countering CCP Drones Act language did NOT make it into the final version of the bill!&nbsp;
This would not have been possible without the incredible engagement of Drone Advocacy Alliance advocates like you throughout 2024. 
On behalf of the DAA Board of Directors, I want to say "thank you" for your help along the way. Your efforts have been inspiring, to say the least. Together, drone users like you took part in hundreds of Congressional meetings, sent thousands of customized grassroots messages, made phone calls, sent tweets, authored op-eds and really ensured that members of Congress and their staff were aware of the drastic consequences a bill like Countering CCP would have on the U.S. drone ecosystem. We appreciate all that you do for our cause.
Now that the NDAA text is public, we expect the U.S. House and Senate to work quickly to pass this final, compromise version this week. From there, we expect the President to quickly sign the bill into law, ending a long struggle to pass the NDAA (without the Countering CCP Drones Act ).
The&nbsp;<a style="color: #ba372a;" title="https://www.votervoice.net/BroadcastLinks/sAu2eytcSw44S8PWgXH_lQ" href="https://www.votervoice.net/BroadcastLinks/sAu2eytcSw44S8PWgXH_lQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable" data-linkindex="1">final NDAA bill</a>&nbsp;is not perfect, and does contain language that some of our opponents are claiming is the Countering CCP Drones Act. However, they&rsquo;re mistaken, and the included language calls for an actual security assessment and not fear-mongering about &ldquo;potential threats, or what may be possible.&rdquo; We are confident that an actual scientific analysis will prove what advocates like you have been saying: the drones you use each day do not pose a risk.&nbsp;This isn&rsquo;t the Countering CCP Drones Act&hellip; it&rsquo;s not even close.&nbsp;
We will continue to work with DAA partners and advocates like you to monitor the situation and be sure to keep you all in the loop as this continues to unfold. DJI and Autel Escape Ban in 2025!

The recent reports of drones flying at night in various regions of New Jersey have raised alarm, but Will Austin, president of Warren County Community College in Washington, NJ, and an expert in the technology, says while he appreciates the public alarm he does not believe the objects are drones or any sort of a threat.

"After analyzing numerous videos shared by concerned citizens, I&rsquo;m inclined to believe that most of the reported &ldquo;large drones&rdquo; were actually manned aircraft mistakenly identified as drones,&rdquo; Austin said. &ldquo;Smaller drones, like DJI Mavics, have also been observed and are likely being operated legally at night. So far, I haven&rsquo;t found any proof to substantiate claims about drones weighing over 55 pounds being in use at night in New Jersey.&rdquo; Austin believes that a sighting of a military drone over the local military base known as Picatinny Arsenal could have occurred, but as of yet there is no evidence to substantiate or disprove such claims.
Austin, president of the college for 22 years, has been instrumental in the development of its drone training program, which has gained national recognition for its cutting-edge training in the design, operation and maintenance of drones for multiple useful purposes.
Austin has been sought out by media and government officials for his opinion about recent sightings of objects at night in New Jersey that have raised concern from the public, and his thoughts have appeared in hundreds of newspapers around the nation, USA Today, and he recently appeared on Inside Edition, illustrating the significance of drone news to the public. Some of the sightings were near former President Donald Trump&rsquo;s National Golf Course in Bedminster.
&ldquo;We should be alert to anything that might be a threat to our security or safety, and this is a good opportunity for the public to better understand this new technology, Austin said. &ldquo;I believe because it is so often connected to warfare or security threats in the popular culture we are perhaps hypersensitive to its misues.
To offer clear, useful public information about the technology, Austin has partnered in with Jonathan Rupprecht, an attorney specializing in the emerging legal issues surrounding drones, who has consulted with Austin and WarrenUAS, the fast-growing drone program at the college, and serves as the college drone attorney.
To contribute to the public dialogue about the issue the two offered their thoughts to a <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2024/12/02/drones-nj-witnesses-experts-growing-mystery-fbi/76700774007/">USA Today</a> among others that offered detailed information about legal issues related to drones, including regulations about their flight and their appropriate and legal use.
&ldquo;Drones are good, and can be used for good,&rdquo; Rupprecht told the outlet. &ldquo;The vast majority of people out there are flying drones for good reasons, whether it be for fun or to save lives, like with search and rescue missions. But you just have to know how to do it properly.&rdquo;
Austin was also interviewed by WFMZ TV, where he pointed out that there is not much information a drone could capture in the dark and that the sightings do not likely pose a threat.
&ldquo;This spike in drone reports underscores a rising public fascination with drones as the future of Urban Air Mobility edges closer to becoming reality, which will place large drone like aircraft into the NAS, Austin said. &ldquo;For now, though, most of these sightings appear to involve recreational drones or misidentifications. It&rsquo;s a great opportunity to keep this dialogue going while distinguishing perception and understandable anxiety from the actual evidence.
Warren UAS is now enrolling some 100 students in its acclaimed drone training program where they have use of more than 100 unmanned systems, nearly one for every student, in two new facilities to learn about designing and programming drones, flying them safely and maintaining them.
Graduates will have job opportunities in a host of fields where drones are being used &ndash; including law enforcement, transit, utility maintenance, entertainment, environmental protection and, especially, agriculture &ndash; a field where WarrenUAS has become a national leader with a specialized niche program. Many graduates have enjoyed starting salaries in excess of six figures with a two-year associates degree.

New Jersey Drone Sightings May Not Be Drones

<a href="https://sdi.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sonoran Desert Institute (SDI)</a>, a leader in online education for emerging technologies, has launched the <a href="https://sdi.edu/programs/associate-degree-uncrewed-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associate of Science in Uncrewed Technology (ASUT)</a> program. Enrollment is now open, with classes starting in December 2024.

The program is designed to cater to a diverse range of learners, from hobbyists and career changers to industry professionals looking to elevate their expertise in UAS technology.

The curriculum for the Associate of Science in Uncrewed Technology program was developed with input from Certificate in Uncrewed Technology &ndash; Aerial Systems graduates and insights from industry leaders, ensuring it meets the ever-changing demands of the drone sector. Designed to keep pace with the rapidly evolving UAS landscape, the program invites students to access high-quality education and training in this dynamic field.
Additionally, the program is approved for GI Bill and Veterans Assistance benefits, as well as Federal Student Aid for qualifying students, making it accessible to a wide range of learners seeking to advance their careers in the UAS industry.
Exploring the Rapid Growth and Practical Impact of the UAS Industry According to a Markets and Markets report, the global UAS industry is valued at $30.2 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow to $48.5 billion by 2029, with an annual growth rate of 9.9%. As highlighted by <a href="https://www.flyingmag.com/modern/trends-impacting-future-drone-pilot-employment/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Flying Magazine</a>, UAS technology is revolutionizing industries, and the need for properly trained and licensed professionals is critical. The ASUT program positions students to navigate this dynamic landscape with confidence, providing them with the tools and knowledge to meet the demand for skilled workers in this field.
The potential of UAS technology extends far beyond recreational use making a significant impact across sectors such as disaster relief and environmental conservation. McDanolds, a senior leader in the Civil Air Patrol, has used drones in search-and-rescue missions and disaster relief operations during the Louisiana floods. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has also integrated drones into storm analysis and disaster preparedness.

Sonoran Desert Institute Launches ASUT Program

Drones appear to have a mysterious interest in New Jersey.&nbsp;
But it's no joke, and now the FBI is watching.
While the&nbsp;Morris County Prosecutor's Office maintains there is no known threat to public safety, the public has been somewhat troubled about the constant drone sightings over the past weeks. As a result, the Newark office of the FBI, the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security, local sheriff and police departments, and emergency management offices in the region are on alert.
<h5 class="gnt_ar_b_h2">When Did the Drones First Appear?</h5>
The Morris County Prosecutor's Office announced that policemen spotted drones on November 18. As the drone sightings continued, the FBI issued a statement on December 3, acknowledging that drones have been seen in several areas along the 70-mile route of the Raritan River.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&ldquo;We have reports from the public and law enforcement dating back several weeks,&rdquo; said the Newark office of the FBI.
<h5 class="gnt_ar_b_p">FAA Flight Restrictions</h5>
After being approached by federal security partners, the FAA issued two temporary flight restrictions last month, banning drones over Picatinny Arsenal Military Base and Trump National Golf Club Bedminster.
&ldquo;We look into all reports of unauthorized drone operations and investigate when appropriate,&rdquo; stated the FAA in a press release. &ldquo;Drone operators who conduct unsafe operations that endanger other aircraft or people on the ground could face fines up to $75,000. In addition, we can suspend or revoke drone operators&rsquo; pilot certificates.&rdquo;
<h5 class="gnt_ar_b_p">Medevac Drone Danger</h5>
To that end, drones near Raritan Valley Community College in New Jersey, prevented a medevac helicopter getting to a car crash victim on November 26.
The Campus Safety Department works with police, fire, and medical services allow medical (and other public service) helicopters to land. The North Branch Fire Department contacted the school at 6:40 p.m. on that date to notify them regarding the incoming helicopter. At 6:53, the landing was aborted due to the drone activity in the area.

I've always been a bit of a tech enthusiast. With over 18 years in software development, I've dabbled in everything from video games to virtual reality, and even blockchain. But one of my most exciting ventures has been into the world of drones. It's a journey that combines my love for technology with a newfound passion for capturing the world from above.
My journey with technology began long before drones entered the picture. Growing up, I was the kid who took apart gadgets just to see how they worked. This curiosity naturally led me to a career in software development, where I could create and innovate. Over the years, I've worked with some incredible companies like Warner Bros. Discovery and 343 Industries, contributing to projects that pushed the boundaries of what's possible in gaming and technology. Each role taught me something new, and I was always eager to apply these lessons to my personal projects.
<h5>Journey with Drones</h5>
My fascination with drones started quite simply. I received a toy drone as a gift, and I was hooked. Watching it hover so steadily in the air, I initially thought it was all about the skill of the operator. But soon, I realized it was the technology within the drone itself that made it so stable. This revelation sparked my curiosity, and I dove headfirst into learning everything I could about drones.
I stumbled upon an ad from Chris Newman at Drone Pro Academy, which promised to guide me through the world of drones and help me prepare for the Part 107 licensing exam. Around the same time, I got a free book from the Drone Boss, which was a game-changer. With these resources, I passed the Part 107 exam and was officially ready to take my drone passion to the next level.
Flying a drone, especially an FPV drone, is like having your head in the clouds. I remember attending Maker Faires in Brooklyn, where FPV drone races were held before the pandemic hit. Watching those drones zip around was exhilarating, and I wished I had been as invested in drones back then as I am now. Who knew COVID would change so much?
The pandemic, while challenging, gave me the time to dive deeper into my drone interests. I spent countless hours practicing my flying skills, learning about drone mechanics, and exploring the various applications of drone technology. It was during this time that I realized the potential of drones to transform industries and create new opportunities.
<h5>Achievements and Projects</h5>
My first self-stabilizing drone in 2020 opened up a whole new world for me. The joy of seeing the world from a bird's-eye view was incredible, and it pushed me to learn more about photography and video editing. I quickly realized that this hobby could become a business.
While pursuing my MBA, I started writing articles on Medium about drone marketing for real estate and began planning my drone company, NJLIC Drone Footage. I got my first break when a company found me on Drone Pilots Central and hired me for video progression projects. It was thrilling to see my work help others visualize their projects in a new way.
As a game developer, I naturally gravitated towards 3D image mapping and LIDAR technology. These tools allowed me to create detailed maps and models, which have applications in everything from urban planning to environmental conservation. It's amazing how drones can bridge my interests in gaming and technology.
One of my most rewarding projects was collaborating with local real estate agencies to create immersive drone walk-throughs. These projects not only showcased properties in a unique light but also helped clients visualize their future homes from a perspective they had never seen before. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and it was gratifying to see how my work could influence such significant decisions in people's lives.
In addition to real estate, I ventured into construction progression documentation. This involved capturing the evolution of construction sites over time, providing stakeholders with a comprehensive view of the project's development. This service proved invaluable for project managers and investors, offering them a clear and concise visual record of progress and any potential issues that needed addressing.

It's amazing to see how quickly the community is growing and evolving, with new innovations and applications emerging all the time.

Looking ahead, I'm excited about the endless possibilities drones offer. I'm particularly interested in integrating drones with IoT and blockchain technologies to create innovative solutions in logistics and agriculture. The idea of autonomous drone networks communicating in real-time is something I'm eager to explore.
I also plan to expand NJLIC Drone Footage, offering advanced services like aerial inspections and environmental monitoring. By leveraging my software development skills, I aim to create custom solutions that meet my clients' unique needs.

Pilot Story: Jeff Dunworth

We all know how useful drones can be&mdash;at least most people do. But for a long time, I didn&rsquo;t fully grasp their potential beyond a video perspective. Sure, I noticed the evolution: GoPros mounted on drones, built-in cameras progressing from 1080p to 2K, 4K, and even 4K 120fps. Drones grew smaller, more powerful, and incredibly accessible. It&rsquo;s amazing how pocket-sized drones today often outperform the bulky models I started flying with years ago.
My journey with drones started in the film and photography world, producing adventure and outdoor television, commercials, and brand films. Drones played a huge role in capturing breathtaking shots, blending my love for the outdoors with my creative profession. Traveling the world, experiencing incredible places, and using my lens to tell stories has been nothing short of a blessing.
But after nine years in the industry, I hit a point where I needed something more. That "been there, done that" feeling crept in, and I craved a new challenge. One day, while taking a break from editing and scrolling social media, I stumbled across something extraordinary: a video of someone using a drone with a thermal camera to help outdoorsmen recover their game. It blew my mind.
I didn&rsquo;t even know drones with thermal cameras existed, let alone that they could be used for something so practical and innovative. It was genius. Not only was it high-tech problem-solving, but it also had a purpose deeply rooted in respecting nature.
<h5>Hunting and Conservation: A New Perspective</h5>
Let&rsquo;s pause for a second. Regardless of where you stand on hunting, there&rsquo;s a core principle that ethical hunters follow: never let an animal go to waste. Harvesting an animal is about feeding families and respecting wildlife. That&rsquo;s where drones with thermal cameras come in. They provide an unparalleled ability to recover game efficiently, minimizing waste and ensuring ethical practices.
Inspired by that social media post, my soon-to-be business partner and I purchased a thermal drone within 24 hours. I was thrilled: flying drones and helping outdoorsmen achieve their goals? It felt like a dream.
But as quickly as the dream took off, reality hit. The state of Michigan announced that using drones to recover animals was illegal. Politics and reasoning aside, I was left with a pricey piece of tech and no way to use it. Part of me accepted the loss, but another part knew there had to be another way.
<h5>The Accidental Discovery</h5>
One morning, while fiddling with the drone, I noticed a button I&rsquo;d ignored dozens of times:&nbsp;Mission.&nbsp;Curious, I clicked it. Suddenly, I was setting up a &ldquo;mission&rdquo; in my backyard without fully understanding what was happening. I launched the drone, and it took off, camera angled straight down, snapping photos as it flew in a grid pattern. Click...click...click.
When it landed, I had about 800 images of my property. I didn&rsquo;t know what to do with them, but with some research, I discovered the concept of orthomosaic mapping&mdash;essentially stitching these images together to create a highly detailed, aerial view of the land. That&rsquo;s when the lightbulb went off.
Outdoor enthusiasts have relied on satellite imagery for years to scout land and plan hunts, but satellite images lack detail. What I saw in that first orthomosaic map was game-changing: precision, clarity, and a level of detail that could transform how people see their property.
<h5>The Birth of Aerial Wildlife Solutions</h5>
And just like that,&nbsp;<a href="https://aerialwildlifesolutions.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aerial Wildlife Solutions</a>&nbsp;was born. In our first year, we created around 15 orthomosaic maps for hunters and landowners, using GeoNadir to process the images and export them as TIFF files. With my background in photography and video editing, we turned those maps into stunning visuals&mdash;every outdoorsman&rsquo;s dream view of their property.
What started as a backyard experiment quickly evolved. We began flying properties across Michigan, incorporating LiDAR technology for 3D-style mapping. Today, we partner with a top-tier printing facility, offering not only detailed property maps, but also large-scale prints on premium materials.

Turning a Passion into Precision

Perhaps seizing an upcoming strategic advantage due to Ukraine's frigid winter, Russia launched its largest attack in months on Sunday to ravage Ukrainian energy production and other infrastructure.&nbsp;
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Russian invaders launched 120 missiles and 90 drones during the action&mdash;including Iranian-made Shahed drones. It was reported that Ukraine defenses shot down 140 of the airborne attackers.
"The enemy's target was our energy infrastructure throughout Ukraine," said Zelenskyy. "Unfortunately, there is damage to objects from hits and falling debris. In Mykolaiv, as a result of a drone attack, two people were killed and six others were injured&mdash;including two children."
The November 17 Russian air campaign against its neighbor also put Poland's armed forces on alert. Polish fighter jets and allied aircraft were mobilized to ensure safety in Poland's border areas.
In addition, Sunday also saw U.S. President Joe Biden authorize Ukraine's deployment of American long-range missiles against Russia&mdash;an action the Russian invaders characterized as an "escalation." However, as North Korea has sent thousands of soldiers to support Russian defense and other military actions in the country's Kursk region, Biden's permission can be seen as a way to help level the playing field&mdash;especially amidst Ukrainian concerns that the Trump administration may reduce military aid to the country in 2025.
&ldquo;Today, much is being said in the media about us receiving permission for the relevant actions," said Zelenskyy. "But strikes are not made with words. Such things are not announced. The missiles will speak for themselves."
