We all know how useful drones can be&mdash;at least most people do. But for a long time, I didn&rsquo;t fully grasp their potential beyond a video perspective. Sure, I noticed the evolution: GoPros mounted on drones, built-in cameras progressing from 1080p to 2K, 4K, and even 4K 120fps. Drones grew smaller, more powerful, and incredibly accessible. It&rsquo;s amazing how pocket-sized drones today often outperform the bulky models I started flying with years ago.
My journey with drones started in the film and photography world, producing adventure and outdoor television, commercials, and brand films. Drones played a huge role in capturing breathtaking shots, blending my love for the outdoors with my creative profession. Traveling the world, experiencing incredible places, and using my lens to tell stories has been nothing short of a blessing.
But after nine years in the industry, I hit a point where I needed something more. That "been there, done that" feeling crept in, and I craved a new challenge. One day, while taking a break from editing and scrolling social media, I stumbled across something extraordinary: a video of someone using a drone with a thermal camera to help outdoorsmen recover their game. It blew my mind.
I didn&rsquo;t even know drones with thermal cameras existed, let alone that they could be used for something so practical and innovative. It was genius. Not only was it high-tech problem-solving, but it also had a purpose deeply rooted in respecting nature.
<h5>Hunting and Conservation: A New Perspective</h5>
Let&rsquo;s pause for a second. Regardless of where you stand on hunting, there&rsquo;s a core principle that ethical hunters follow: never let an animal go to waste. Harvesting an animal is about feeding families and respecting wildlife. That&rsquo;s where drones with thermal cameras come in. They provide an unparalleled ability to recover game efficiently, minimizing waste and ensuring ethical practices.
Inspired by that social media post, my soon-to-be business partner and I purchased a thermal drone within 24 hours. I was thrilled: flying drones and helping outdoorsmen achieve their goals? It felt like a dream.
But as quickly as the dream took off, reality hit. The state of Michigan announced that using drones to recover animals was illegal. Politics and reasoning aside, I was left with a pricey piece of tech and no way to use it. Part of me accepted the loss, but another part knew there had to be another way.
<h5>The Accidental Discovery</h5>
One morning, while fiddling with the drone, I noticed a button I&rsquo;d ignored dozens of times:&nbsp;Mission.&nbsp;Curious, I clicked it. Suddenly, I was setting up a &ldquo;mission&rdquo; in my backyard without fully understanding what was happening. I launched the drone, and it took off, camera angled straight down, snapping photos as it flew in a grid pattern. Click...click...click.
When it landed, I had about 800 images of my property. I didn&rsquo;t know what to do with them, but with some research, I discovered the concept of orthomosaic mapping&mdash;essentially stitching these images together to create a highly detailed, aerial view of the land. That&rsquo;s when the lightbulb went off.
Outdoor enthusiasts have relied on satellite imagery for years to scout land and plan hunts, but satellite images lack detail. What I saw in that first orthomosaic map was game-changing: precision, clarity, and a level of detail that could transform how people see their property.
<h5>The Birth of Aerial Wildlife Solutions</h5>

In our first year, we created around 15 orthomosaic maps for hunters and landowners, using GeoNadir to process the images and export them as TIFF files. With my background in photography and video editing, we turned those maps into stunning visuals&mdash;every outdoorsman&rsquo;s dream view of their property.
What started as a backyard experiment quickly evolved. We began flying properties across Michigan, incorporating LiDAR technology for 3D-style mapping. Today, we partner with a top-tier printing facility, offering not only detailed property maps, but also large-scale prints on premium materials.

XFRobot Elevates Unmanned Operations

Perhaps seizing an upcoming strategic advantage due to Ukraine's frigid winter, Russia launched its largest attack in months on Sunday to ravage Ukrainian energy production and other infrastructure.&nbsp;
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Russian invaders launched 120 missiles and 90 drones during the action&mdash;including Iranian-made Shahed drones. It was reported that Ukraine defenses shot down 140 of the airborne attackers.
"The enemy's target was our energy infrastructure throughout Ukraine," said Zelenskyy. "Unfortunately, there is damage to objects from hits and falling debris. In Mykolaiv, as a result of a drone attack, two people were killed and six others were injured&mdash;including two children."
The November 17 Russian air campaign against its neighbor also put Poland's armed forces on alert. Polish fighter jets and allied aircraft were mobilized to ensure safety in Poland's border areas.
In addition, Sunday also saw U.S. President Joe Biden authorize Ukraine's deployment of American long-range missiles against Russia&mdash;an action the Russian invaders characterized as an "escalation." However, as North Korea has sent thousands of soldiers to support Russian defense and other military actions in the country's Kursk region, Biden's permission can be seen as a way to help level the playing field&mdash;especially amidst Ukrainian concerns that the Trump administration may reduce military aid to the country in 2025.
&ldquo;Today, much is being said in the media about us receiving permission for the relevant actions," said Zelenskyy. "But strikes are not made with words. Such things are not announced. The missiles will speak for themselves."

Russia Intensifies Attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure

Drones can perform aerial photography feats that no one would believe possible just a few short years ago. New technologies require learning about new accessories that facilitate and optimize their use. Most often this need for new accessory process is discovered by trial and error. Trial and error can be a costly process with Inspire 3 drones costing north of $16,000. So let&rsquo;s save you some time and money by discussing how and why drone landing pads have become a necessary accessory for drone flight.
There are eight main benefits to using a drone landing pad that new drone pilots need to discover.
&bull; Getting great aerial photography/video is a complete waste of time and energy if your lens has dust all over it from takeoff thrust blowing up from the ground. You will have a minimum of 4 rotors producing enough thrust to pulverize your lens and gimbal with debris.&nbsp; One grain of sand can lock up your gimbal.&nbsp; A Landing Pad provides you with a clean surface to take off from as well as insurance that your lens and gimbal will be clean throughout takeoff.
&bull; Let&rsquo;s talk electric motors &hellip; pulling sand and dirt through your drone motors at takeoff and landing is the biggest cause of motor failure. The clean surface of a landing pad can eliminate premature motor failure.
&bull; One 5 second takeoff and landing on a beautiful sandy beach will cost you at least an hour of clean up maintenance. Your Paint will be sand blasted so now your bird looks old before its time. Who wants to spend an hour cleaning sand out of your drone.
&bull; There are times when you must take off and land in a field of tall grass. Your drone is not a weedwhacker.&nbsp; Placing down a Landing Pad will prevent tall grass prop strikes.&nbsp; Props can be very expensive and when they get nicked, they get out of balance and performance is diminished.&nbsp;
&bull; Pebble strikes are worse than hitting tall grass. Landing Pads keep your props insulated from pebble and gravel surfaces.
&bull; All pilots need to be Safety Conscious. We do not want pedestrians setting up a picnic in your ground operations vicinity. A landing pad clearly marks your ground operations so that pilot, crew and the public know to stand clear.

&bull; If you have ever lost sight of your drone and your controller tells you to look to the Northeast, you do not have time to get out your compass and wait for it to settle to figure out where Northeast is. Search and Rescue operations often deploy drones and manned aircraft as part of their life saving efforts. &nbsp;When the manned aircraft arrives, the pilot is on his radio talking with the drone pilot to see where the drone ground operations are.&nbsp; The drone pilot quickly replies: see the big orange dot in the North corner of the clearing? The manned aircraft pilot reports: Roger, I see your landing pad and will set down at the South corner of the clearing. The visual ID is made quite simple and facilitates safely operating multiple aircraft in the same area.
Not all drone landing pads are created equal.&nbsp; Really cheap pads blow away just like a tarp or towel would as soon as the drone thrust hits them.&nbsp; Some cheap pads offer stakes to pound in the ground to hold the pads down.&nbsp; Good luck pounding in stakes on the tarmac.&nbsp; Who wants to lug a hammer around and who wants to pull stakes up every time you move.

Opinion: Trump vs. DJI

In the ongoing mission to protect the nation from potential cyber threats from foreign drone makers, the Department of Defense, General Services Administration, and NASA implemented an interim rule on November 12 that prohibits the acquisition and operation of drones identified in the American Security Drone Act of 2023.
As many government agencies deploy drones for missions that generate sensitive data, the use of these foreign UAVs&mdash;as listed by the Federal Acquisition Security Council&mdash;risk asset sabotage and potential disruption of critical operations.

U.S. Government Issues provisional Drone Purchasing Restrictions

<figcaption id="caption-attachment-51309" class="wp-caption-text">Obviously, no one can predict the future with 100-percent accuracy&mdash;and president-elect Donald Trump hasn't yet explicitly discussed his views on the drone industry&mdash;but let's look at his early actions and statements to forecast potential drone policies during the next Trump presidency.</figcaption>

<h5>Technological Development</h5>
Acknowledging the economic importance of drones, the Trump administration formed the Drone Integration Pilot Program under the Department of Transportation so that companies&mdash;as well as public agencies&mdash;could develop and test new drone tech in controlled situations. The goal was to boost drone-industry growth. The DIPP evolved into the BEYOND program on October 2, 2020&mdash;now under the FAA&mdash;to "collect data to develop performance-based standards, address community feedback, understand potential, and realize the societal, economic, and community benefits of drone use." The four-year program also seeks to streamline approval processes for drone integration.&nbsp;
Hypotheis: Trump may support similar programs that increase opportunities for developing new drone technologies.&nbsp;
<h5>Chinese Drones and Fair Competition</h5>
Trump's 2018 trade conflict with China&mdash;identified by his administration as a "strategic competitor"&mdash;meant that tariffs were imposed on DJI drones. The action increased the cost of DJI and other Chinese-manufactured drones for both consumers and industrial users (first responders, infrastructure surveyers, etc.). However, the tariffs were initiated to protect American jobs and forge fair competition.
Hypotheis: Trump&rsquo;s commitment to fair competition may lead to favoring initiatives that diminish reliance on Chinese technology.
<h5>U.S. Drone Manufacturing&nbsp;</h5>
Trump's previous &ldquo;America First&rdquo; agenda encouraged creation of domestic jobs, while simultaneously limiting dependence on foreign products. In the drone industry, however, DJI still remains ahead of most American models by offering high tech at lower cost.&nbsp;
Hypotheis: Offering incentives and other policies favorable to growth, Trump could drive American drone companies to increase production and develop technologies on par with Chinese UAVs. Cost factors may need to be addressed if American drones are to compete with DJI pricing and value for money.
<h5>Security&nbsp;</h5>
In his first term, Trump sought to restrict potential espionage with his China Intiative. Overseen by the U.S. Department of Justice, the China Intiative seeks to "identify and prosecute those engaged in trade secret theft, hacking, and economic espionage to protect our critical infrastructure against external threats through foreign direct investment and supply chain compromises, as well as combatting covert efforts to influence the American public and policymakers without proper transparency."
Hypotheis: Security worries over Chinese drones could reappear during the upcoming Trump administration, prompting renewed safeguards for U.S. data and intellectual property, as well as seek stronger protections against espionage.

While not nearly as frigthening as the mythological Roman underworld guardian Orcus,&nbsp;<a href="https://bostondynamics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boston Dynamics</a> has devised a high-tech protector for the nearly 2,000-year-old remains of the city of Pompeii. Named "<a href="https://bostondynamics.com/products/spot/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Spot</a>," this autonomous robot patrol dog is embedded at the site to identify and chase away grave robbers and relic thieves.

However, Spot is more than a guard dog. Because the robot can traverse different types of terrain and patrol tunnels, caves, and other difficult-to-access locations, Spot is also tasked with gathering data for continuing studies of the Pompett site.
