Prism Supervisor integrates drone autopilot flight control systems with real-time, AI-based observations at the edge to improve mission safety, efficiency, and performance, enhancing the capabilities of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
Prism Supervisor software empowers mission planners with a flexible programming framework and software development kit (SDK) to facilitate custom, intricate mission scenarios. During flight, Prism Supervisor adapts its autopilot functionality in real-time, dynamically generating mission segments and flight plans on the fly, minimizing operator impact while improving mission success. For example, a Prism Supervisor-controlled UAV flying a search mission pattern can autonomously circle and alert the operator upon the detection of a human or threat.

Teledyne FLIR Expands Next-Generation Hadron 640 Series

<a href="https://www.flir.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Teledyne FLIR</a>, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, today announced that Eye on Cloud <a href="https://www.eoctech.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(</a><a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.eoctech.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">EOC) Tech</a>, a Korea-based video security and thermal imaging IP camera company, will leverage the <a href="https://www.flir.com/products/lepton/?vertical=microcam&amp;segment=oem" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Teledyne FLIR Lepton</a> radiometric thermal camera module in its early fire detection (EFD) series of IP cameras.
EOC is introducing the series of EFD cameras as part of its <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.flir.com/oem/thermal-by-flir/https://www.flir.com/oem/thermal-by-flir/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thermal by FLIR</a>&nbsp;collaboration.
The HI1612-OH and HI1612-MW series cameras offer multiple resolution options for continuous monitoring of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and other critical infrastructure, security, and facility applications. With non-contact temperature measuring, the FLIR Lepton can identify elevated heat before ignition, which then triggers an alarm system. EOC&rsquo;s ONVIF-compliant EFD cameras help improve safety while enabling fire personnel to attack a potential fire more quickly than when relying on traditional smoke alarms.

<h5>Thermal Performance and SWaP Enhancements&nbsp;</h5>
The USA-manufactured Boson+ not only provides four times the thermal resolution at 640 x 512 pixels versus the predecessor thermal camera on the Skydio X2, but it also doubles the thermal sensitivity of competitive payloads at 30 millikelvin (mK) or better.&nbsp; It is the most sensitive commercially available uncooled longwave infrared (LWIR) camera module for drones. The increased sensitivity and resolution provide sharper scene detail, improving detection, specifically in outdoor, low-contrast scenes&mdash;a critical need for thermal inspectors and first responders, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, and search and rescue personnel.&nbsp;
The Teledyne FLIR team also worked closely with Skydio to develop custom optics to reduce the weight of a standard Boson+ camera optics by 48%. The weight reduction helps maximize flight time while also decreasing the volume of the thermal camera module by 43% for an improved payload form factor.&nbsp;
The Skydio X10 boasts customized thermal image signal processing that leverages Teledyne FLIR&rsquo;s<a href="https://www.flir.com/products/prism-isp/">&nbsp;</a><a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.flir.com/products/prism-isp/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Prism ISP</a>, further improving imaging quality. The resulting thermal imagery is available as radiometric JPEGs (R-JPEG), meaning that each image captured includes temperature data of every pixel in the scene for granular, quantitative insights needed for solar panel, machinery, and utility inspection.&nbsp;
That R-JPEG data captured from the X10 can then be combined with the R-JPEG data captured from handheld Teledyne FLIR thermal imaging cameras to create comprehensive inspection reports from the air to the ground. By completing the factory alignment at Teledyne FLIR, integrators receive a thermal zoom solution calibrated for maximum performance that eliminates boresight wander and other image artifacts while zooming. Critical to dynamic missions, Teledyne FLIR&rsquo;s advanced lens control electronics provide thermal gradient compensation to maintain focus across the full operational temperature range while object range compensation maintains focus through zoom, even for near targets. Built-in tests (BIT) run at startup, continuously, or are commanded to provide real-time notification of issues and maximize operational reliability.

Integration of new sensing types within UAVs is quickly making drones indispensable for industrial and commercial inspection applications. Going further, the ability to fly with multiple sensor types together, from visible imaging to thermal, is also improving the utility and productivity of operators ranging from UAV pilots to maintenance personnel acting on the inspection data.
However, just as critical to capturing the data in flight is interpreting the data post-mission. Whether the mission is to pinpoint water damage on a large warehouse roof or to assess solar panels within a solar farm, the ability to take that data and turn it into action is where UAV inspection drives true value.
<h5>UAV Inspections Start with the Airframe</h5>
Pilots need access to domestic drone makers making airframes and sensors that are secure by design. Since its introduction this fall, the Teledyne FLIR <a href="https://www.flir.com/products/siras/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SIRAS</a> drone has impressed the industry with its mix of features that enable it to perform a variety of commercial and industrial applications quickly, easily, and securely.
The SIRAS does not connect to the internet, local Wi-Fi, or cellular networks. This prevents pathways that too easily enable third parties and hackers to view and steal data and images. All data is stored in high resolution on the aircraft microSD card, and low-resolution data can be stored on the controller microSD card. The drone is also not subject to geo-fencing, so control remains in the hands of the pilot. In other words, SIRAS enables pilots to launch within a minute of powering up, no questions asked, and take responsibility for knowing when it is safe to fly.

The SIRAS drone is also outfitted with a gimbaled dual-camera Vue TV128 payload, including a high-resolution radiometric thermal (<a href="https://www.flir.com/products/boson/?vertical=lwir&amp;segment=oem" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FLIR Boson</a>), a 640x512 infrared thermal camera with 5x digital zoom, and temperature-measuring capabilities. The payload also includes a visible 16MP camera with up to 128x zoom to pinpoint details, all attached to a swappable quick-connect system.
It is the only complete airframe solution with the patented <a href="https://www.flir.com/discover/professional-tools/what-is-msx/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FLIR MSX</a> technology. It adds visible edges and outlines to thermal imagery to provide critical information in real-time and for post-flight analysis. Unlike image fusing (merging visible light imagery and thermal imagery), MSX is additive and does not dilute the thermal image. <h5>Effective Data Interpretation and Reporting </h5>
With an effective drone and corresponding payloads, the next step is to capture the data required by leveraging the pilot&rsquo;s skill, including flying in the right conditions and the right relationship to the target. Post-flight, processing images correctly and reporting those findings is vital&mdash;every step prior will not matter unless the data can be extracted and interpreted to accomplish the mission. <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://www.flir.com/products/flir-thermal-studio-suite/?vertical=condition+monitoring&amp;segment=solutions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FLIR Thermal Studio software</a> is a powerful tool to optimize captured images and video: to make accurate measurements, batch process images, and report findings&mdash;all in a single program.
The before-mentioned SIRAS professional drone provides high-resolution radiometric thermal imagery for industrial and utilities inspection. Pilots can efficiently manage thousands of thermal images and videos with advanced processing features when used in concert with FLIR Thermal Studio Suite. Then they can use that information as part of predictive maintenance or condition monitoring programs of critical components. Pilots can also conduct system troubleshooting to complete missions faster and more accurately than ever before.
<h5>Imaging Optimization Through Thermal Tuning</h5>
Sometimes, the raw imagery captured during a mission doesn&rsquo;t offer the related details or interpretation needed. Here, the pilot can load the data into Thermal Studio Suite to adjust how the image appears to make the appropriate determinations. Adjusting the image, such as the image color palette, or focusing on a specific area of interest to gauge the captured temperatures of a group of pixels, might be required.
The operator may also need to adjust the image&rsquo;s &ldquo;span&rdquo; manually, the window of temperatures the inspector is looking for in an image, and the &ldquo;Level,&rdquo; which is the mid-point of the span. Think of these definitions in terms of a television set, where span concerns contrast and level represents brightness. The operator can better examine temperature data within a specific range through this process, called thermal tuning. There might be hotter or colder temperatures measured in the scene, but if the operator is only concerned with measuring a specific temperate range, it makes identifying those temperatures significantly easier to save time and improve productivity.

<h5>Batch Processing</h5>
One of the significant advantages of doing thermal inspections with drones instead of handheld cameras is the ability to inspect expansive areas quickly while capturing many images in the process. Plus, roof and solar inspections usually require capturing large datasets of images for creating orthomosaics and other collective data products. These datasets can be thousands of images.
Thermal Studio&rsquo;s batch processing function is a tremendous time saver for drone pilots. Batch processing empowers the user to select multiple images to process, then apply the same color palette, temperature scale, temperature measurement parameters, and more to the entire dataset in seconds. This can save hours preparing images for reports and entire datasets for stitching.

<h5>Reporting the Data</h5>
The final step represents compiling the processed images, videos, and data into a report that summarizes the key findings. Thermal Studio and other third-party software allow users to compile digital reports that can be shared with colleagues, customers, partners, and officials.
In Thermal Studio, once that analysis is complete, the software includes a button to add images to a report. Then, the user selects the appropriate report template, or they may create their own, and the system automatically generates the report. Thermal Studio reports also contain all the measurement data and notes fields for additional required commentary and recommendations. The report can be provided to anyone with Thermal Studio for editing and analysis, or it can be exported as a PDF for anyone to see.

How To Use Multispectral Data from UAV Inspection Missions

As drone technology matures, it must improve and continuously deliver clear value to those investing in it. There is no better example than the combined drone and imaging industry, which is currently experiencing a power curve of growth and innovation. Wide-scale drone adoption for commercial and industrial use cases is increasing as features improve, the imagery becomes more powerful, and software gets more intelligent.
For four decades, <a href="https://www.flir.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Teledyne FLIR</a> has been a market leader in thermal cameras with a wide range of solutions that have expanded to drones, which are also being utilized in an array of settings, from industrial to automotive inspections to prosumer/consumer applications. And recently, the company introduced the <a href="https://www.flir.com/products/siras/?vertical=suas&amp;segment=oem" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SIRAS</a> dual thermal-visible payload drone for commercial and industrial use, priced under $10,000. This new drone allows firefighters, utility workers, and even commercial roofers to inspect quickly and ensure a job is done well.
Teledyne FLIR introduced SIRAS in response to the following three significant trends affecting the public safety and utility markets:
<h5>[1] Geofence-Free Flying</h5>
Drone pilots must be able to fly when and where the mission demands, especially public safety and critical infrastructure personnel facing emergencies where time is of the essence. Therefore, pilots need control in their hands to make decisions on where and when they need the drone to fly.
Many drone manufacturers created geo-fencing systems to keep drones from flying in certain places without their approval. Geo-fencing uses the drone&rsquo;s GPS location to determine whether they&rsquo;re located within a geo-fenced area and locks the pilot out from flying if the drone is determined to be in the wrong location. While this is often noted as a safety feature, for certain situations, it can prevent pilots from completing the mission and thus creating more safety issues than it solves. Power generation, transmission, and distribution facilities are often considered critical infrastructure and therefore are typically geo-fenced&mdash;even for the utility operators who need to inspect these components to keep the power grid functioning.

Recognizing the challenge of making it easier and more viable to inspect utility infrastructure via drone, the SIRAS drone does not use geofencing. This allows FAA Part 107 certificated drone pilots to fly without the added complication of securing approval first via the drone manufacturer, allowing operators to fly when and where the mission demands. It places the responsibility to fly in legal airspace where it belongs &ndash; with the pilot.
<h5>[2] Cybersecurity</h5>
Nation-state bad actors have created a frightening reputation for themselves during the past decade, using cyber exploits and hacks to steal, ransom, sometimes publish, or even destroy highly valuable data from various industrial sources throughout the Western World. Therefore, owning the data captured by the drone and knowing where it goes is pertinent to maintaining effective data security. Removing vulnerabilities, such as requiring cloud storage or creating profiles that increase the threat area, is vital. Also, market demand for drones produced outside China has risen, given concerns about data privacy. &nbsp;That is why SIRAS is engineered for data security by purposely omitting Wi-Fi or cellular capability features and is manufactured and assembled in Taiwan and the USA.
<h5>[3] Pixels and Multispectral Imaging</h5>
Drone pilots need to see different wavelengths of light, including thermal infrared, especially in public safety and industrial inspection scenarios. The solution is to provide small, lightweight, yet powerful payloads that combine thermal and visible imaging capabilities. In-the-air inspections are more efficient than manual inspections as they can quickly cover a large area. The thermal sensors used on drones can be leveraged for quantitative temperature measurements. But one of the critical factors required to get an accurate qualitative measurement is to have enough pixels on target.

The number of pixels required can vary depending on the thermal camera model, but at minimum, a 2x2 square of pixels is required to provide an accurate temperature reading. Dedicated thermography cameras have a reticle on the screen that shows you when you&rsquo;ve covered enough pixels to get an accurate measurement of an area.
Previous-generation, drone-based thermal cameras for commercial use don&rsquo;t often tell the operator when they&rsquo;re close enough to get an accurate measurement. One or two pixels may be enough to determine that a temperature difference exists qualitatively, but it is not enough to provide an accurate temperature of an area.
