Copenhagen Airport Shut Down By Mystery Drones

Two or three mysterious and large drones flying over the airspace of Copenhagen Airport on Monday caused the temporary shutdown of the airport.

“I cannot rule out that it is Russia,” said Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Frederiksen also characterized the incident as “the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date.”

"We have seen drones over Poland that should not have been there," she added. "We have seen activity in Romania. We have seen violations of Estonian airspace."

Although at press time, authorities were not able to confirm who has responsible for the drone flyover, the incident has triggered new concerns in the wake of Russia's seemingly escalating actions against NATO powers. Oslo Airport in Norway was also shut down for four hours after a similar yet separate drone incursion the very same evening.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked on "unfounded accusations" leveled at Russia, while Vladimir Barbin—Moscow's ambassador to Denmark—stated to reporters that the incident "clearly reflects an attempt to provoke NATO countries into direct military confrontation with Russia. We are not interested in further escalation of tensions in Europe."

Denmark officials opted to let the drones fly over Copenhagen Airport, rather than shoot them down, as planes were on runways, fuel depots were nearby, and the airport was crammed with passengers

"The risk was too great," said Danish police Chief Superintendent Jens Jespersen.
