Insects now have more to fear than the dreaded RAID spray can terminating pests in those classic TV commercials.
In Southern California, a "killer drone" has been deployed to battle a surging mosquito population, dropping bacterial spore pellets in marshes and ponds to rain death on larvae that can grow up to spread diseases to human beings.
Developed by the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District, the drone targets mosquito eggs laid in waterways and other wetlands.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s quite a bit more mosquitoes due to the rain," said John Savage, as he took the fight to the San Joaquin Marsh Reserve near the University of California, Irvine. &ldquo;You can see out here almost every single marsh pond is full of water.&rdquo;
Reportedly, conventional traps are capturing more than three times the 15-year average of mosquito infestation.&nbsp;

Typically, anti-mosquito treatments involve backpack sprayers, trucks, airplanes, and helicopters, but the drone can apply precision treatments, as well as avoid trampling through sensitive environments and reach areas that trucks and backpack sprayers can't get to. Furthermore, the drone can treat one acre in less than two minutes. The same job undertaken by a worker with a backpack sprayer would require an hour or more of hiking.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re always looking for advancements in technology that can get the job done more efficiently, more beneficial to the team, and less invasive,&rdquo; added Nguyen.

&ldquo;The mosquito larvae are filter feeders, so they feed on the bacteria," said Savage. &ldquo;It enters their gut and it&rsquo;s a growth regulator. So essentially&mdash;if you guys have seen the movie Alien&mdash;it blows out their stomach.&rdquo;
Drone operators in the district are required to have a Federal Aviation Administration remote-pilot license ,as well as a California Department of Pesticide Regulation unmanned aircraft vector control technician license.
Mosquito-borne diseases are a significant public-health threat. In California, West Nile virus is the most common&mdash;and most serious&mdash;mosquito-borne disease. The California Department of Public Health states more than 7,500 human cases and 300 deaths have occurred since 2003.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s more of a battle,&rdquo; said Nguyen. &ldquo;You&rsquo;re not going to win the war against mosquitoes, but you can gain some ground. And with advancements in technology, we&rsquo;re gaining ground.&rdquo;

<a href="https://tytorobotics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tyto Robotics</a> recently shipped their first Flight Stand 150 test stand.
In 2014, the company&mdash;then called RCbenchmark&mdash;sold its first piece of equipment&mdash;a 5kgf thrust stand called the Series 1580. Fast forward to today, and they have just shipped the Flight Stand 150, which can measure a whopping 150kgf of thrust.
It is both the largest test stand Tyto has ever built and the world&rsquo;s largest off-the-shelf thrust stand for motor and propeller testing.
<h5>Why Propulsion Testing</h5>
When Tyto co-founders Charles Blouin and Dominic Robillard were Masters students at the University of Ottawa, they wanted to design a miniature, hand-held helicopter. Their first iteration was manually controlled, and it used the airframe of a coaxial helicopter. It flew fairly well, but the coaxial design made it very unstable in windy conditions&mdash;plus it was noisy.
The biggest ongoing issue was that the electronics were too heavy, and the brushless motor was very inefficient. The result was a flight time of only three minutes.
They decided to build a DIY thrust stand/dynamometer to better understand what was going on with the motors. They ended up going down the rabbit hole with this side project, and built several versions of the test stand.
In the end, the DIY stand was able to help them find a more efficient motor/propeller combination, and they more than doubled the flight time of their helicopter.
While working on the DIY thrust stand, they started to see some interest from colleagues and researchers wanting a stand for their own research. This is when they realized that there was a real need for testing tools for UAV designers.
They named their first 5kgf thrust stand the Series 1580, then released the Series 1780 25kgf a few years later, then the 40kgf, and, finally, the 75kgf version in 2019.
In 2022, they shipped the first Flight Stand 150&mdash;a stand 30 times bigger than the original Series 1580.

<h5>What Motors and UAVs Can the Flight Stand 150 Test?</h5>
The measurement limits of the Flight Stand 150 were selected with two things in mind: the types of motors that clients needed to test and the size of UAVs and eVTOL the stand would serve.
By interviewing clients and performing independent research, Tyto&rsquo;s team created a list of motors that clients would likely need to test. A few motors that made the list include MGM COMPRO&rsquo;s REB 30, EMRAX&rsquo;s 208, T Motor&rsquo;s U15XXL, NeuMotors&rsquo; 12030, and MAD Components&rsquo; M50C35.
This short list of motors also allowed them to design a motor mounting plate that would fit most motors. The mounting plate is used to secure the motor to the test stand while aligning it with the necessary probes and ports.

The next step was to create a list of UAVs and eVTOL that generated thrust greater than 75kgf per propeller&mdash;thus requiring a larger test stand than the Series 1780. Aircraft that made the list included UAVs or eVTOL with a MTOW corresponding to &le;150kgf per propeller, so 600kg MTOW for a quadcopter or 1200 MTOW for an octocopter.
<h5>Dual Motor Testing</h5>
The Flight Stand 150 was also designed to permit testing of dual motor and coaxial rotor designs, since they are very common in UAVs and eVTOLs. Front-to-front, back-to-back, and offset rotor testing is possible. With two motors, the combined forces measured for the whole system can be up to 300kgf for thrust and 300Nm for torque.

<h5>What Features Are New?</h5>
The Flight Stand line of test stands is designed to succeed Tyto&rsquo;s Series 1780 test stand, which measures up to 75kgf of thrust and 48Nm of torque. The Flight Stand 150 was built in parallel with Tyto&rsquo;s other Flight Stand test stands, which offer a 1,000Hz sampling rate, general analog inputs, monoblock load cell and ASTM calibration.
<h5>1,000Hz Sampling Rate</h5>
The 1,000Hz sampling rate means that users can obtain real-time dynamic data from their tests. More specifically, it means that the timestamps associated with the measured values exactly match the timestamp at which the analog measurement was taken on the circuit board. This feature provides many opportunities:
<ul>
<li>Precise current and voltage analysis (visualize sinusoidal patterns).</li>
<li>Propeller vibration testing.</li>
<li>Reaction time analysis.</li>
<li>Accurate flight replay with controller data.</li>
</ul>
<h5>General Analog Inputs and Probes</h5>
The stand offers two general analog input ports, so users can connect whatever probes they need, such as pressure sensors, humidity sensors, vibration sensors, etc., up to 10V. The stand also comes with two PT100 temperature sensors that measure -30 &deg;C to 100 &deg;C, and one optical RPM probe for measuring motor speed.

<h5>Custom Monoblock Load Cell</h5>
Using a monoblock load cell means that there are no moving parts in the force measurement unit&mdash;no bearings or hinges that introduce unwanted and random friction. The load cell is custom designed to provide the proper ratio of thrust/torque measurement so both forces are precisely measured within the desired range. The load cell casing is also designed to minimize airflow restrictions while maintaining a minimum thickness in order to test coaxial systems.
<h5>ASTM Calibration</h5>
The stand is calibrated using the ASTM E74 standard for thrust measurement (339 points) and an internal standard for torque calibration (204 points). This feature is a highlight for companies who seek certification of their aircraft and need referenceable data. Additionally, the stand undergoes a 1,044-point crosstalk calibration to ensure there is no interference between thrust and torque measurements.
<h5>What This Means for the UAV and eVTOL Markets</h5>
What makes the Flight Stand 150 unique is that it is an off-the-shelf product. Once an order is placed, it is shipped in just a few days.
While there are benefits to designing a custom test stand, the wait times often extend to weeks and months, meaning UAV designers have to wait a long time before getting the data they need.
Similarly, designing a test stand in-house can take up time and resources that would be better used elsewhere. Dominic Robillard, co-founder and CTO of Tyto Robotics, says that each year they have clients come to them after having attempted to build their own test stand. Some of these clients have some success, but many mention the resources invested were not worth it, as they lost focus on the main goals of their project.
With the Flight Stand 150, UAV and eVTOL builders can have the stand within days of realizing their need, causing minimal interruptions in the design process. In this highly competitive industry, time to market is crucial.
<h5>Where the Industry is Going in the Next Ten Years</h5>
Charles Blouin, President of Tyto Robotics, sees a bright future for electric aviation and UAVs. &lsquo;&rsquo;We see a clear trend in the industry: UAVs are getting better every year. They fly longer and with better software. The business case for many applications depends on flight time. UAV and eVTOL manufacturers need to put much more effort into optimizing their powertrains than in 2017. We are going to keep innovating to provide our customers with tools that help them fly longer and get their products to market faster.&rsquo;&rsquo;

Tyto Robotics Pursues Bigger and Better Motor/Propeller Testing

It had to happen. Drones are working their way into almost all aspects of life, tech, business, entertainment, infrastructure, combat, and now ... funeral services.
We recently came across an article about a former RAF pilot in Great Britain who started a business scattering ashes via drone.
While in the Royal Air Force, Christopher Mace&nbsp;experienced scattering the remains of&nbsp; former service personnel at sea. That duty inspired him to start Aerial Ashes and partner with A.W. Lymn funeral directors to offer the service for families in the East Midlands region of England.&nbsp;
It is a good match, as drone use is becoming fairly common in the funeral business. A.W. Lymn was already offering families the option of filming funerals via drones when Mace approached the company to take the service a step further&mdash;or higher.
"The actual spectacle of the release of the ashes itself does look spectacular," says Mace, "and it's something that is a good takeaway for the families."

We were also surprised that one of The Droning Company's featured pilots, <a href="https://www.thedroningcompany.com/pilot/douglas-pratt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Douglas Pratt</a>, has been offering the service in the United States.
"A widow wanted to scatter her husband's ashes over a police station as he was a former police officer," explains Pratt. "I used the <a href="https://www.thedroningcompany.com/blog/stork-plate-revolutionizes-drone-delivery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stork Plate</a> to distribute the ashes from about 35 feet over the station. The key is not to release the ashes from too high of a height, as it just looks like a puff of smoke. For this service I charge $500."

Biz Development: Scattering Ashes by Drone

A drone got a bit too close to an annoyed alligator swimming in the Rio Javaes in Tocantins, Brazil.&nbsp;
While fishing, Luciano Lopes was using his drone to scout the river&mdash;a tactic that was not approved by a local alligator. Lopes was unaware of the beast until the moment it leapt up from the water and chomped down on his drone.
Perhaps military outfits looking for ways to disable combat drones will "draft" alligators as drone defenders.&nbsp;

Alligator Proves to be an Excellent Defender Against Drone "Invasion"

Europe's gargantuan annual guitar festival in Wroclaw Poland got a pretty awesome gift for its 20th anniversary concert&mdash;a Guinness World Record for Largest Guitar Ensemble.
The 7,676 guitarists who crammed into the city's market square to perform "Hey Joe" in a communal celebration of the power of music all shared the prize, and the recording-setting event was captured by drone pilot Cine Ghost.&nbsp;

Founded by Polish guitarist, composer, educator, and recording artist Leszek Cichoński, the event started out as a tribute to his musical hero Jimi Hendrix, but the original Thanks Jimi Festival evolved into the current Gitarowy Rekord Guinnessa&mdash;an appropriate name change, as the gathering keeps breaking Guinness records.&nbsp;

In fact, my wife and I have been onstage with throngs of guitar players from all over the world to break the record twice.&nbsp;
Cichoński invited us to be a part of the 2018 festival, which set a Guinness World Record with 7,411 guitarists. That record lasted just 12 months, as we were back in 2019 to set a new record with 7,423 guitar players.
The global pandemic forced the Gitarowy Rekord Guinnessa to become pretty much a virtual event in 2020 and 2021, and the 2022 extravaganza came back stronger than ever, with a bigger promotional push, expanded performance and educational offerings, tons of synergistic concerts around the city, and contests and other guitar-oriented exhibitions to pump up excitement and engagement. (Sadly, we were not able to attend this year to reconnect with Cichoński and so many of our European musical friends to chalk up our third Guinness World Record.)

The spirit of Jimi Hendrix still floats over the festival. In addition to musical artists playing Hendrix songs on the main stage throughout the annual May 1 gathering, the run at the Guinness World Record has always been during a performance of "Hey Joe"&mdash;the Billy Roberts song that became the first single by The Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1966.
"We meet every year to unite ourselves with music in the name of Jimi Hendrix," said Cichoński at the 2019 festival.
I can't find the words to truly reveal how beautiful this festival is, how lovely the people of Wroclaw are, and how calmly and confidently Cichoński and his staff manage so many fans, artists, and performances. It's truly a magical time. At the 2022 festival on May 1, participants of the Gitarowy Rekord Guinnessa formed a big guitar heart on the Wrocław market square. The organizers stated the heart was "a sign of solidarity with the struggling Ukraine and our neighbors who have come to Poland, and who have found refuge here. We are with you. Make music not war!"

Drone Captures 7,676 Guitarists Setting a Guinness World Record

On May 14, 2022, drone hobbyists will gather to enjoy a "Let's Drone" day at the beach in Fiesta Island, San Diego, California. This will be no ordinary day. Yes, we will have our beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers of water, but we will also have our drones for recreational use.
The organizer, <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://scullystaffing.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Samantha Scully</a>, is an FAA part 107 certified remote pilot. "The first Flyway I attended was last year with Skip Fredricks with the Grossmont Colege students from his <a href="https://www.grossmont.edu/academics/programs/drone/index.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Drone Technology </a>training program," says Scully. "I started my day by driving from Hollywood to San Diego to join the other hobbyists. I networked with about 20 new droners, learned safety tips, learned the difference between yawing and pitching forward, and learned to command my DJI mini Mavic. After observing the others, I also discovered that I loved using my drone, and even better, I enjoyed capturing the pictures over the mission bay."
The Let's Drone day at Fiesta Island will be similar. It is for hobbyists, family, and kids who want to take flight or not. We will start at 8:30 am, an early Saturday morning, in an area away from people, and we will have a coned-off place. Bring your tables, chairs, and be more relaxed to stay hydrated from morning to noon hours. We will greet and fly responsibly for about five hours. Scully has a rich history of education and honors, including a BBA in Management Information Systems and a United States Navy Medal of Commendation, Achievement, and Management Certification. In addition, she has multiple certifications, including Tech Recruiter, Instructional Designer, ScrumMaster, and Scrum Product Owner.
She is committed to community assistance and advocating for those that cannot. She always provides support for many groups, specifically women in technology, STEM, and Veterans. She continually volunteers her time to help others elevate their dreams and know that they always have choices.

In 2019, I had just gotten my first drone, a Mavic 2 Pro. My daughter Sophia Stormy, who lives in Santiago, Chile with her mother, was just nine years old at the time, and on one of my visits to see her, we went to the roof of their apartment to fly the drone over the city to get some footage. By today's standards, I probably broke a few rules, such as flying over moving vehicles, but the industry was very new in Chile, and they didn&rsquo;t have the laws in place that they do now.
To be honest, I was very nervous. This was the first time I had flown the drone so far away, and I was stressing as to whether the drone would return to me, or what I would do if it dropped from the sky. Once I got my confidence up, I sent it a bit further away each time, and I eventually decided to try some night photography. The resulting video is not the greatest example of drone footage, but it was my first effort, so I thought I&rsquo;d share it with you.
The music score for the video is a song called &ldquo;Years Gone By&rdquo; from the Heaven &amp; Earth album, Windows to the World [2001]. The song was written by myself and guitarist Howard Leese (Heart/Bad Company), and it&rsquo;s probably more Celtic sounding than South American, but I feel it still fits. Howard played a Taylor 12-string Leo Kottke Signature Model acoustic, and I played my Fender Stratocaster through a Marshall Major twinned with a 50-watt Lee Jackson-modded Marshall that Howard had given to me. I used the Stratocaster's volume control to create a violin sound by turning the volume off, picking a note, and then using my little finger to raise the volume. This way, you don't hear the normal pick attack of the note, making it sound a bit like a bowed violin. We also had someone add the Uilleann pipes, which are incredibly loud. After about an hour of recording at our home studio, we were getting noise complaints from a quarter of a mile away.
