For 4th of July celebrations across America this year, will technology dazzle, or are crowds looking to be thrilled by tradition and gunpowder?
As drone light shows continue to evolve, towns and cities planning celebrations for Independence Day can choose the safety and precision of drone productions or the bombast and unpredictability of conventional fireworks. Some are even combining both.
Two years ago, the town of Gypsum, Colorado embraced the modern and went with a drone show for its big 4th of July party. This year, however, it's back to good ol' fireworks.
"The drone shows left us wanting," town manager Jeremy Rietmann told NBC News. "It didn't feel like America. Fireworks can inspire awe like little else can."
According to NBC, it's not just Gypsum&mdash;a lot of towns that have tried out drone light shows are switching to fireworks.
"Fireworks touch on all the senses," says Phil Grucci, CEO of Fireworks By Grucci, which has been in business since 1850. "There's the sense of sight and smell, and you can feel and hear fireworks. Drones cover just one sense&mdash;eyesight."
However, a lot of celebrations are using drones instead of fireworks because they only treat the eyes. They don't want noise, poor air quality, and fire hazards.
"When you have a lot of fireworks explosions, they are horrific to senior citizens, individuals with disabilities and animals, as well as veterans with post-traumatic stress," says Kurt Cabrera-Miller, president of the Sylmar California Neighborhood Council. "But the main concern is fire prevention.&rdquo;
"Drones offer a unique storytelling medium," says Rick Boss, president of Sky Elements Drone Shows. "Fireworks and drones can each do things the other cannot do, and we love it when they come together."
To that end, Boss' company is currently testing "Pyro Drones" that can carry fireworks aloft and exploit the benefits of each medium.
The "battle of the skies" between drones and fireworks likely won't be decided any time soon, but the upside of the conflict is that, in the hands of creative artists, each medium has the power to unleash awe.

Cupid may have been kicked to the curb by drones this year, as Valentine's Day drone shows, drone engagement ceremonies, and drone sales crowd the celebration of love.

Drones Share the Love this Valentine's Day

<a href="https://skyelementsdrones.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sky Elements</a> is racking up the world records for its drone light shows.
The Fort Worth, Texas company broke two <a href="https://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Guinness World Records</a> on Sunday, December 17, using 1,499 drones to take home awards for Largest Fictional Character Made With Drones (a nutcracker) and Largest Aerial Image Made With Drones (a tree with falling snow).
Earlier this year&mdash;on the 4th of July&mdash;Sky Elements had napped the Guinness World Record for <a href="https://www.thedroningcompany.com/blog/july-4-drone-show-sets-guinness-world-record" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Largest Aerial Sentence Formed By Multirotor Drones </a>("Happy 4th of July 2023").

Verge Aero Democratizes the Drone Show

A giant drone skeleton floating near the world&rsquo;s tallest building&mdash;Burj Khalifa in Dubai&mdash;during a Halloween celebration went viral on social media.
However, the spooktacular event may have been a trick, rather than a treat.
Reportedly part of a drone show by Russia's <a style="color: #ba372a;" href="https://geoscan.show/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Geoscan</a>&nbsp;company, the skeleton even got a "wow" from Elon Musk on X.
However, photos show the skeleton's feet appear too low to for the drones to be flying safely, and some media outlets are questioning whether the video is real.
It wouldn't be the first time Dubai has been the location of a fake video, as a huge Barbie doll emerging from its pink Mattel box was really a CGI-enhanced creation by the social media agency Eye Studio.&nbsp;

What? Deep Fake Drones?

The late Kobe Bryant was honored at Lakers Night at Dodger Stadium, as the home team hosted the Atlanta Braves. (The Dodgers ended up losing to the Braves, 6-3.)
Bryant's daughter's Natalia, Bianka, and Capri attended the game, as did their mother, Vanessa&mdash;all wearing Dodgers jerseys.
Natalia, a 20-year-old USC student threw out the first ball to All-Star outfielder Mookie Betts. Betts, who was playing catcher for the pitch, wore Bryant's #24 jersey over his uniform.&nbsp;
The Dodgers organization also presented a $100,000 check to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation&mdash;a nonprofit that honors the legacy of Bryant and his daughter Gianna, who were killed in a 2020 helicopter crash. The foundation provides funding to underserved athletes.
A rather spectacular drone show was also on the agenda to celebrate Bryant's memory.

Dodger Stadium Drone Show Honors Kobe Bryant

Forget the confetti cannons, M&amp;M-filled pastries, surprise paint splashing, smoke flares, lightsabers, and pinatas. Serena Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, wanted a more modern and spaceage way to reveal their daughter Olympia's upcoming sibling.
A "fake out" for the attendees at the tennis legend's all-day baby shower for family and friends in Florida was a cake cutting that revealed nothing but yellow goo.

Drone reveals sex of Serena Williams' baby

Excuse the cliche, but, appropriately, the long, strange trip ended where it began&mdash;in San Francisco.
The final performance of Dead &amp; Company&mdash;composed of Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, as well as guitarist John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, and drummer Jay Lane (who stepped in for the Dead's Bill Kreutzmann on the final tour)&mdash;occurred at Oracle Park (home of the baseball SF Giants) on Sunday, July 16.
However, while the band members allegedly will no longer perform under the Dead &amp; Company name, it's a safe bet that surviving Grateful Dead musicians will step onto stages in the future as solo acts, duos, or in new groups. After all, live performance is at the core of the Grateful Dead ethos.
In bidding adieu to the "musical gathering" of the Grateful Dead, drones became a thrilling part of the final shows.
In a social-media post by the band itself, 600 drones were used to showcase icons of the Grateful Dead's visual trademarks, such as the dancing bear, top-hatted skeleton, a red rose, and more.&nbsp;
It was a fitting way to deploy modern technology to honor a historic and legendary "hippie group" that started out as an old-school hug band.
RIP Grateful Dead (1965-2023).

Dead & Company Boogies into History with a Drone Show

The Seattle Center was the place to be this past weekend, and not just because of the MLB All-Star Game.
To celebrate the game, baseball, the city of Seattle, and more, 600 drones were flown up to 400 feet above the ground to form iconic visuals.

Major League Baseball's All-Star Game Drone Show a Grand Slam!

<a href="https://skyelementsdrones.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sky Elements</a> of Fort Worth launched 1,002 drones to thrill the crowd at a North Richland Hills, Texas, 4th of July celebration, and also set a Guinness World Record for the &ldquo;Largest Aerial Sentence Formed by Multirotor Drones.&rdquo; &nbsp;The 10-minute show was reportedly the biggest drone light show ever staged in Texas.
The North Richland Hills drone show was a homage to America's history, and included aerial LED-lighted images of the moon landing, Paul Revere's ride, George Washington crossing the Dealware River, and more.&nbsp;
In addition to the Guinness World Record, Sky Elements broke its own company record by producing 40 shows over the 4th of July weekend&mdash;a feat that required putting more than 10,000 drones in the sky.
Although it's still hard to beat the thrill and visceral impact of explosive fireworks extravaganzas, there's no argument that drone light shows are pretty awesome in their own way, and are a greener and safer alternative. Drone shows eliminate the harmful smoke and chemical residue of traditional fireworks, as well as avoid the risk of accidental wildfires and potential injuries to show staff.
