The June 24 earthquakes—the first a 7.2 magnitude preshock that was followed 40 seconds later by a magnitude 7.5 mainshock—have been responsible for more than 1,700 deaths at press time.
The U.S. military is supporting relief operations with more than 900 soldiers deployed inside the country, and another 800 personnel standing ready in Caribbean hubs. In addition, Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) announced a joint $1 million donation to the Red Cross to assist its aid initiatives.
As relief efforts increase world-wide, tragic stories are still coming in, such as a Southern California father's death, a soccer star's wife losing her life protecting her child, Venezuelan deportees from the United States dying in the hotel they were being held, and more.
Here is some recent drone footage showing the aftermath and rescue efforts.
