DJI received some good news today when the Senate Armed Services Committee released its National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) without a mandate to ban the Chinese company's drones from the United States.

The House version of the NDAA was passed last month, which included amendments from the Countering CCP Drones Act that seek to ban DJI drones over national security concerns. The House bill requires the FFC to place DJI on its "Covered List," essentially preventing the agency from authorizing sales of DJI drones, controllers, software, and other products.

However, the Senate appears to be more sensitive to the potential difficulties a DJI ban would impose on public safety, agriculture, infrastructure, and other agencies that currently depend on the relative affordability and tech innovations of DJI drones. In fact, more than 6,000 representatives of U.S. police and fire departments petitioned members of the Senate Armed Services Committee to stop the inclusion of the Countering CCP Drones Act in the NDAA.

But whether the Senate action spells a reprieve for DJI is still a jump ball. Even if the bill passes the full Senate, the House and Senate versions of the NDAA will need to reconcile their differences as they relate to DJI. A compromise could open DJI to various restrictions, or even the chance of a reintroduced ban in the final bill.
