07 March 2025
Russia appears to not be embracing hopefully productive peace talks—given that the country launched a withering drone and missile attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure yesterday.
The belligerent action in the midst of seeking a peaceful resolution to Russia's invasion of Ukraine was criticized by U.S. President Donald Trump, who went as far as to suggest sanctions on Moscow.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated he was "strongly considering large-scale banking sanctions and tariffs" on Russia if it does not broker a peace agreement with Ukraine.
"To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late." he said.
The narrative from the United States regarding the direction and ramifications of Russia/Ukraine peace negotiations has been confusing at times, and some European leaders continue to be concerned over potential concessions to Moscow.
Supporting Trump's post, Ukrainian Presidential Aide Andriy Yermak answered on X: "We support tougher sanctions against Moscow from the West and other measures. The strikes on Ukraine must stop immediately if Russia truly wants to end the war."
Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy also commented after yesterday's strikes, saying, "The first steps toward real peace must include forcing the sole source of this war, Russia, to stop such attacks against life."
